How to read this drum music

TIPS:

  • This is a really good example of a creative drum pattern. It is a Linear style drum beat which means you are only ever hitting one drum or cymbal at a time.

  • Think of this pattern as a constant flow of eighth notes 1& 2& 3& 4& etc (with 2 1/16th notes at the end)

  • Notice the Hi Hat cymbals are on the 'up' beats or '&' counts in the first and third bars and on the 'down' beats or '1,2,3,4' counts in the second and fourth bars.

  • The bass drum and snare drum alternate between the 'down' and 'up' beats aswell. This gives this pattern it's distinctive sound.
